N-Formylmorpholine is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 138°C. The viscosity of the liquid is about 2 mm2/s. It is used in the synthesis of organic compounds, such as tetramethyllead and tetraethyllead. Also, N-Formylmorpholine has been shown to react with carbonyl groups in organic compounds, forming a carbonyl group containing an n-formyl group.

It is a good nonprotonic solvent with high solubility and selectivity for aromatic hydrocarbons.

Besides, N-formylmorpholine is also applied in C4 (LNG) cracking project for desulfuration and extraction of solvent, which can increase the yield (relative to DMF, ACN, NMP processes).
